The Beverly Historical Society Art Show: Call for Work

Located on Cabot Street, The Beverly Historical Society welcomes The Bear Gallery into their space to curate an art show based on Montserrat College of Art's neighborhood.
All students, alumni, and faculty are encouraged to participate in this event. Stop by the Cabot House museum for inspiration; the museum has many finds that will interest all majors. Montserrat Students receive free admission for a tour.
Create artwork that shares your view of the past/ present/ future of Beverly. All work submitted will be juried by both Beverly Historical and Bear Gallery staff.

The Bear Gallery and Crane Estate Submissions

Starting Tuesday, October 18, The Bear Gallery will start taking in submissions of student art for the show at the Crane Estate. Work should be brought to The Bear Gallery in the Student Village Basment from October 18 to October 26. Work should be ready to hang and clean. This means paintings should be wired, work on paper should be fixed and clean. For any work that has special installation requirements please feel free to email len.thomas-vickory@montserrat.edu. The submission forms will be on the desk to the left when you enter. Please fill out the form in full so that it can be properly identified. Any work that is not properly prepared will not be brought to the Crane Estate.

This show is a part of a larger show that the Crane Estate hold each Fall. This year the exhibit will be open on November 5 and 6. All current students and alumni are encouraged to submit work and attend the show. This is an excellent way to gain exhibit experience and show work in an off campus location.

The Bear Gallery, in the Student Village, will keeep its' doors open for the remainder of the semester in an effort to allow more viewing times for the school comminity. The currrent show on display is :All Wound Up." An excellent survey of drawings from students. Also, this Friday, October 21 the Bear Gallery will be hosting another reception at thier satellite space at 238 Cabot Street from 6:00 to 9:30. This show is "The Mystery Show" and hosted by student Peter Faasse. Live music will be present this evening.

All Wound Up: In Lines of Lines and Shading

The Bear Gallery invites all students and alumni to the next show located in the Student Village basement. All Wound Up will consist of any pencil, pen, charcoal, conte-crayon, and printed work. Alumni and students are encouraged to show a drawn work that has been created within the year.

All drawings will be accepted. Bring in work that is unique to you.

The Bear Gallery asks for all work to be Gallery ready. Submit work of any size to the curator of the show, Emily Fung or any Bear staff. You may also drop your work off to the Gallery.

Submission end date will be October 11, 2011

The opening of the show will be Friday October 14, 2011

Aestate Ludimus : In Summer We Play

The New England summer is an opportunity to make work that is unbridled and without constraint. In Summer We Play exhibits art made by students and alum that share the freedom and the playfulness of the endless sumer. Works by Sara Benson, Suzy Evans, Sam King, Sarah Krizon, Tom Maio, Bradford Rusick, Brianna Sancious, Sara Santarsiero, and Liz Sultzer vary greatly in material, concept, and tone, but all share the bounding expression of those long, hot, and raucous summer moments.

Contributing artist, Suzy Evans, who conceived the idea for this exhibition, prints lithographs based off of collaborations with her six year old cousin. With brightly colored figures and mark, Suzy reminds the artist that they should be driven by the simple, unadulterated thrill that is found in the act of making the art. Sarah Benson's day-glo masks and diptych celebrate the use of color and from, a spontaneity that can also be seen in the volatile mark of Sarah Krizon's paintings and drawings on paper. Sara Santarseiro's and Bradford Rusick's collaborative installation clamors up the wall and reaches out in all directions, an embodiment of their process and the summer that saw to it. These artists, among others, introduce the new Bear Gallery space on Cabot Street with a vigor, vision, and variety that opens us to the beginning of a very exciting year.

The Crane Estate

The Bear Gallery invites all students and alumni of Montserrat College of Art to participate in an upcoming event held at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich, Massachusetts. The Crane Estate is holding their annual Art Show and the Bear Gallery has been invited to show our fellow students in one of their buildings.

The Bear Gallery is asking for 50+ submissions of work in all mediums that has been inspired by the North Shore. Work must be “gallery-ready” (work should be matted, framed, wired, and ready to be hung on the wall), then dropped off by October 29th in the Bear Gallery, located in the Student Village Basement. The work that is submitted will be juried, so not everything will make it into the show. CALL FOR WORK: The Bear Gallery’s Brwn Bag Auction!

The Bear Gallery is looking for work to be submitted for the Brown Bag auction; you can submit anything you want, whether a painting, sculpture, craft etc. as long as it can fit in a paper bag. A donation of 20% of the proceeds will go to the Montserrat Japan Relief Fund, and the remaining 80% will go back to the artist.
Please drop work off in Len's office or in the Bear Gallery by April 25th. All artwork that requires it must be gallery ready; this includes making sure work is fully dry, fixed, etc. Please also submit your work already in a bag with a description of your item.

The auction will be held Tuesday, April 26th in the Bear Gallery.

**Exceptions may be made for certain items if they do not fit in a bag. Check in with Len to make sure it's okay.

The Bear Gallery (ursa minor) reception for the Lost and Found Show will be Tuesday 5-7 pm February 22nd, not the 21st as previously scheduled. (Due to the school being closed on President's Day).

Collaborative Collage and Potluck:
The Lost and Found reception will feature an opportunity to collaborate on collage projects. Bring in found objects, old magazines, newspapers, etc. We will provide workspace, tools, and materials. Afterwards, the work will be hung up on one wall as part of the show! Food for the reception is potluck style. Cook anything you desire and bring it to the opening. Share some creativity and some favorite recipes!

Wabi Sabi

Wabi Sabi is described as a Japanese aesthetic that portrays beauty as something that is imperfect, impermanent, and forever incomplete. In the summer of 2010, a group of students had a chance to live, explore, experience, and create in Japan, filling sketchbooks with records of their journeys. The Bear Gallery's first show of the fall semester will be an exhibition of these student's personal sketchbooks, and a peek into life and travel in a different culture.

EAST MEETS WEST

East Meets West is a show where we have exchanged work between Montserrat and an art school in Niigata, Japan. The work centers on the ideas of how American and Japanese students perceive each other's cultures covering anything from pop culture, history, literature, food and whatever else fits. The intention is to create a visual dialogue between the two cultures.

This show will be up in the Bear Gallery from February 16 to March 5th from 11:10-1:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

"Crevasse"

The American dictionary defines a crevasse as a wide crack or breach, a fissure, or a deep cleft. The students at Montserrat College of Art have been working for the majority of the summer to create work based on their definition of what a crevasse is. Digging deep into their imaginations, these young artists out of Beverly, Massachusetts have produced enough work to run the first Bear Gallery show for the 2009-2010 school year. This first show has a well-rounded collection of works from these prosperous students, ranging from collage to paint to pen and ink. The five members of the Bear Gallery staff have done a lot of hard work preparing the new gallery in order to jump right into “Crevasse.” The eager bunch is hoping for this to be a successful year for the gallery to thrive and grow with more creative artwork, more excited students, and more interested public. Courtney Cooney, Justin Anderson, Kellie O’Hara, Michelle Shugrue, and Robyn Alvin will be welcoming the public to the opening night of “Crevasse” Wednesday at 6:00pm with pride and excitement.

We are currently on the lookout for a new space for the Bear Gallery for the 2009-2010 school year. We have a few places in mind, and soon enough we will find our new home and be ready for our first show!

UNTIL THEN: Let's start this year off strong and put our talents into making pieces for the "Crevasse" show at the BEAR Gallery. The show will be hung August 25th and will last until September 11th. We'll be accepting submissions from August 20th through the end of orientation.

Things to think about when making your piece: What is a crevasse? What does it smell like? What does it do? What does it not do? Where are they found? Can you eat one? How big is it? Why is it? How would you explain it to a creature not from our society? What does it look like? What color is it? What is it's texture? Is it someplace that you go and hide?

Any medium you desire will be accepted. Please limit the size of your pieces to smaller than a kitchen table. If you're interested in submitting an installation piece that is an option too. Please come talk to Kellie, Michelle, Robyn, or Courtney if you have any questions or insights.

The Cat's Meow

This exhibition, curated by Montserrat students Laura Tejeda, Margaurita Spear & Amelia Leonards, depicts cats through the eyes of contemporary artists. The artists represented are Margaurita Spear, Laura Tejeda, Debbie Gray, Debbie Ducharme, Julia Katz, Amelia Leonards, Laura Sheehan, Lindsay Parker, Rebecca Yankes, Lauren O'Leary, and David Brooks.
Cats, both wild and domestic, have held a place in art history beginning with ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian art. In fact, the Egyptians produced art depicting all aspects of cat life; that’s how special the cat was to them. Cats have held a place in both Christian and Islamic art. Mohammed, the founder of Islam, even had a beloved pet cat of his own. During the Middle Ages when the black plague swept through Europe, it was the cat who hunted the disease carrying rats that caused the illness. The Asian arts have long adored cats because they caught the rats that would eat the valuable silks that were produced in Asia. Some of the best examples of cats in art have come from Asian ink drawings and scroll paintings. From the 17th through the 19th centuries, such artists as Judith Leyster, Francisco Goya, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir portrayed cats in their artwork. In the 20th century artists such as Pablo Picasso, Max Kahn and Will Barnet also created works where the image of the cat plays a significant role.

In congruence with the opening of the show, we would like to extend a charitable hand to a local animal shelter by encouraging visitors of the gallery to make cash donations to be passed on to help homeless cats find the loving homes they deserve.

DR. SWITCH-BLADE’S CIRCUS COALTION COLLABORATION SHOW

Dr. Switch-blade's Circus Coalition presents a handful of artists who wish to reveal their methods of collaboration and the evidence of their various experiments conducted at their leisure. The Coalition, curated by Tim Zercie and Chelsea Rogoff, Montserrat College of Art seniors, will divulge multiple drawings and paintings that have been cut into by multiple hands. The circus is a huge collaboration of many performers and entertainers working in unison to display a system of acts that enthrall the audience’s eyes, and send their imaginations into an entirely different realm. This collaboration exhibit reveals unsettling and repugnant elements of the circus, and through the act of creation and amalgamation of the eleven artists. The act of collaborating can act like a switchblade, stabbing into the previous marks, going with or against their visible existence, manifesting a magical paradox of creation verses annihilation. While in the process, the group allows their minds to merge and fuse together, without verbal compromising, as one unconscious. We invite you to witness the mesmerizing menagerie of our mind’s eyes.

After taking a break for the summer, the Bear Gallery is back. You can find us at 283 Cabot Street in Beverly, MA. This new space was graciously donated by the owner and we are thankful to have it. There have also been changes to how the gallery is run. As always, we are student-run and student-curated. Now, we are also entirely volunteer based. ART DU MALI: MONTSERRAT IN AFRICA

Montserrat College of Art’s student-run Bear Gallery presents a new unique exhibit, Art du Mali: Montserrat in Africa, beginning on April sixteenth. For three years students have adventured into Professor, Caroline Bagenal’s Arts of Africa class which travels to Mali, Africa for winter break. The program allows students to immerse themselves into the culture and daily life, while simultaneously studying the diverse art of more than five Malian tribes. Curated by two students who went on this extraordinary trip, Jacqueline Sorensen, a sophomore, and Chelsea Rogoff, a junior at Montserrat. Art du Mali showcases work created while traveling by the eight students, and inspired by their amazing experiences. Malian masks, jewelry, sculpture, and textiles will also be on display, and Malian food will be served. Come and witness the strength and beauty of Malian people in the face of devastating poverty, always held tightly together with their rich traditions, loving communities, and love of life that comes alive in their art. Donations of basic art and school supplies will be collected at the gallery throughout the duration of the show for the Dogon people. Our Dogon guide and friend, Moise Sagara, will hand deliver them to schools in Dogon Country for children anxious to create drawings and paintings they often sell to travelers.

Autonomy is an exhibit that displays how individual artists confront the composition with drawing and painting. The works address the human figure and abstract landscape while allowing the nature of the medium to explain form. An alternation of scale will address the nature of intimacy and monumentality in viewing work. The viewer will experience how plasticity, relationships, and medium communicate from a two dimensional plane. The five artists displaying work consist of Steve Carvalho, Anthony Palocci Jr., Christina Roginski, Richard Dolan, and Peter Brefini.

WANDERLUST: The Art of Travel

Montserrat College of Art's Bear Gallery presents "Wanderlust: The Art Of Travel." Curated by senior Halley Murray, it is an exhibition of artwork that has been inspired by traveling and all things similar, such as: exploration, new places, making discoveries, and leaving home. The word "wanderlust" literally translates from German to mean "desire of travel", and at Bear Gallery starting this February 25th, you can see a variety of different artists' interpretations of what it means for them to explore the world we live in. Wanderlust is one of the first big shows at the Bear that has opened it's doors to the greater community of artists from Boston and beyond, and hopefully will break the ice for other students looking to curate shows there beyond the Montserrat community.

Bear Gallery is located at 116 Rantoul St. in Beverly, MA. It is an entirely student-run and student-curated space, offering a chance for art students to prepare for being a professional artist.

Montserrat College of Art’s Bear Gallery presents Mini Opus: Small Work from Montserrat. Curated by senior Jessica Lewis, the show presents work throughout the Montserrat family. Alumni, faculty, students, and staff have been invited to submit work less than six inches in any medium. The philosophy of this show is to share our work with each other and the community, so that almost anyone can be a collector of work they love. Keeping with tradition, all of the pieces will be sold at a grand closing reception for ten dollars a piece. (image courtesy Michael Kahan)

This is an exhibition that draws from the wide range of figurative engagement in Montserrat student and alumni work and investigates some of the provocative and primal concerns that attract the artists to use one of the oldest and most universal of subjects.
Montserrat students and alumni have long been creating work with an emphasis on neurotic corporeality. This exhibition will provide an opportunity to investigate the numerous disparate yet concurrent strains of figurative art popular with students and alumni of Montserrat. Additionally, the focus on Montserrat alumni and students means an important look at the indigenous, local avant-garde art culture right here on the North Shore of Massachusetts. The local diaspora of recent Montserrat graduates has resulted in a small but vibrant community of local cutting-edge artists, and Viscera is a much-needed chance to highlight their efforts.

Bear Gallery was created in the spring of 2007 at Montserrat College of Art. Utilizing any space that we can, we help other students create shows that pull together themes that interest them. Students manage the space with the help of Montserrat Gallery and the Student Services Department. The goals are to gain experience in gallery operations, including exhibition proposals, installation, press, and gallery maintenance.

This year, we have been lucky to recieve a donated home from Windover Developments. The new location is at their Beverly Depot Condominiums located at 116 Rantoul St. Come check it out! We are one block from Redbrick Studios and right next to the train station.
